Not a cat in a hat

The hat the cat wore in Dr. Seuss children's book

This novelty hat ended up with me when a friend was having a clearout of their fancy dress kit.

Made from foam-like fabric and wire around the brim, it keeps its shape well

Leather Wide Brimmed Hat

A soft leather wide-brimmed hat. 

Too tall to be a boater and not quite a top hat in falls between to two.

There is no stiffening or hardening of the leather, this adds to the comfort and softens the shape..

Play Hat

 This not a play hat but a hat from a play, was used for a production of the King and I

Homemade from a cardboard tube, covered in shiny fabric and sequins. 

Held on to the head with an elastic chin strap since the diameter is too small for and adult.

Came as part of job lot of hats but I think this is one only suitable for the bin, not worth saving for anything.

Ankh-Morpork Hat

This hat makes me think of characters from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels

A fantasy wizards hat I found at a Harry Potter fair in my village

Made of some sort of thick cotton or wool fabric shaped over a former of some sort, but not felted.

The hats online blurb says women wizard hat, but I don't really understand why, it certainly fits and suits me.

Nice wide foldable brim, with a nice little kink in the point of the crown, gives this cheap hat a great look

Novelty Police Helmet

 Unlike the previous post, this is not a genuine police helmet.

A novelty helmet for a fancy dress made from that compressed paper mache felt substance that make the basic structure for a lot of novelty hats.

The size is also smaller than the real thing making it look almost comedic on my head.

This one does have a badge though.

Police Custodians Helmet

 The police Custodians helmets were first worn 1863 replacing the Top Hat worn before

Originally made of cork and balanced on the head they provided none or limited protection. It wasn't until the 1970's that a proper padding, safety style harness, chin straps and hard shells were gradually added.

This helmet is the crest style of custodians helmet, purchased without its badge on the front. Helmets with badges are sold for much more money as the badges are collectable.

One other note the custodian helmet is the helmet worn by male police officers

Shiny Fez

This shiny hat I want to call a fez, but its some fantasy concoction

Possibly was originally made for something theatrical I suspect or maybe a particular Larp encounter it will remain a mystery as it was purchased from a 2nd hand stall at a Larp Fayre, with no labels or any clues

Cost me a £1 and I will find a use for it.

Constructed from lots of soft fabrics, glue and a bit of stitching, it has no real rigidity like a real fez.

Capotain

The Capotain (Copotain/Capatain) is tall wide-brimmed hat worn during the late 16th and 17th centuries

The hat is associated with Puritans and English Civil War

The hat is also with Pilgrim that settled in the Plymouth colony America in 1620, hence its often also called a Pilgrims Hat

The hat is also worn by witchfinders and had a buckle on the front of the crown, but both of these are images created in 19th Century fiction probably untrue. 

Fez like

This tapering hat is very fez like in shape, but lacks the tassel on top and is actually too tall,

however I suppose you might still call a fez.

A hat for use in War of the Roses medieval reenactment the shape can be seen in many contemporary illustrations.

I can't remember where I got this, as it was over 15 years ago but would have been a reenactors market no doubt.

Worn a couple of times, but never found a costume that it went with so ended up not being used much.

Woolen Acorn

This medieval style acorn hat is made of wool, lined with linen and sewn in to shape.

.

Acorn hats in addition to being acorn-shaped, have a little pip of fabric at the top that in the case of acorn hat probably represent the stalk or possibly the remains of the style.

The pip also occurs through the felting process if this were a felted, rather sewn acorn hat.

Looking at the pictures I think this hat needs more air time or ironing, its been crushed in the bottom of bag too long and never seem to see the light of day.
