Leather Goblin Hat

 

A leather skull cap with a tail

This is an odd cap I spotted at a market, it's made of leather with a long section at the rear reminiscent of a nightcap in some ways.

The crude look of the stitching makes me think of something a goblin might wear in a fantasy image.

Another possibility might be a librarians cap or perhaps somewhere to took your long hair

I'm please with this find and hope to find a character or multiple characters to wear it. 

Fancy Posh Hat

 This brown hat has lots of decoration

In the style of a muffin cap, i.e. a headband with baggy loose crown.

The hat includes a decorative fabric headband, decorative badges/beads around the headband with a large broach badge in the same style at the front.

a bunch of orange feathers behind the main badge and a lace-like fabric decorating the join between the headband and loose crown.

This feel like a posh nobles hat or at least the hat of someone who wants to appear wealthy.

It's even comfortable to wear.

Cheap Chinese Style Hat

 This hat is about as cheap as they come and even as a novelty hat not recommended

Mimicking some other watermelon style oriental hats, this is made of some cheap fabric over some thin foam, that both makes it uncomfortable and a poor fit. The shiny fabric is slippery and this makes it readily just fall off your head, no matter how tight you pull it down

I have a similar hat here and although also a novelty hat far more comfortable and better made

Shakespeare Might Have Made This

Another of the theatrical hats, this time a Tudor cow pat hat

No doubt an outcast from some Shakespearean production company.

A good all-round merchant to a noble hat to go with your Tudor costume

Nobles

This hat could be used by an Oriental or European noble or relaxing merchant

Not really sure of the period it belongs to.

This hat ended up in our crew kit, unclaimed it remains there ready for use.

Dragon Hat

This hat is sold as a Qing Dynasty Chinese Landlord Hat also a Dragon Cap

Hat wearing in China as mentioned in previous posts was an important part of China's ancient costume code.

As part of the code when a man reached the age of 20 he began wearing a cap, this included in a ceremony called the "Guanli" (The Ceremony of the Cap) which indicated he had grown up.

The rules on cap wearing did change between dynasty's and so did the definition of what was a cap as opposed to head covering like the bamboo hat.

Caps also had social status, the poor in some dynasties were not allowed to wear caps

Way of the Dragon

Yet another oriental novelty hat

I now have 4 of these hats in different colours, they are all basically the same pattern, even the badge is the same symbol.

This style of hat I believe originates from the Chinese Qing Dynasty.

The best thing about these hats is they are cheap.

A Hat for a Medieval Steward

While this style of hat is mostly considered peasant wear, even a single small feather can enhance it, this cap as also been enhanced by fur trim around the headband.

Not quite posh enough for royalty, this is the short hat that could be worn by castellan, steward or wealthy merchant character.

Greeky Fez

This hat reminds me of one worn by Greek soldier in full dress uniform, look up Evzones and you will see what I mean.

The hat is halfway between a fez and a smoking cap, with a very long tassel.

This is a theatrical hat, one made for use in a theatre production I don't know what production, only it was sold as such on e-bay.

Made of soft red felt, I would put it the head of small Greek curiosity shop owner.

Chinese Style

A basic novelty Chinese style merchant skull cap see in many a Hong Kong movie

Worn also by nobles, wealthy children.

Novelty hats of this style can be found all over eBay and the like for well under £10 

Merchant Cap

This is what I call a medieval pill box shaped merchant cap.

Many hats or caps don't have special individual names, so they are more often than not listed by the particular shape they are similar to such as pill box, skull, acorn shape no matter what style or period they are from which is fine but some need a bit more description.

 This cap was made to mimic a common medieval hat, normally of felt.

Now I like things in categories and what I can say about this hat is while similar in looks its not a smoking or leisure cap, they don't have turned up bands and are generally decorated with embroidery, sequins and tassels, so not a smoking cap. 

This hat falls into my category merchant cap, which is any hat that does not have its own type name and looks too good to be a peasant hat but not overdecorated enough to be a noble hat.

So you get medieval pill box shaped merchant cap.

Colourful Hat

This pill box shaped soft hat is what you might call a smoking cap.

A very simple ring of fabric with a fabric lid, this one is not decorated, covered in sequins, buttons, embroidered or tasselled but does have colourful panels. 

A very comfortable hat mainly for indoor use as it offer a bit of warmth to a balding head like mine.

Makes a excellent hat for a north African/Arabic trader character

In parts of Africa this would be called a kufi, kofi hat.
