National Hat Day 2022

A Hat Fact

The possibly oldest hat ever found still in one piece was on the body of a bronze-aged man whose body was found frozen in the mountains between Austria and Italy.

Estimated to be from around 3250 BC, so over 5 thousand years old.

The hat was a bearskin cap with a chinstrap made of several hides stitched together.

Cap or Hat

The basic difference between a hat and a cap is a hat has a brim,a shaped crown and cap does not, most caps have a visor or peak and usually fit closer around and to the surface of the head.

Hats also tend to have a function, such as protection against rain/the sun, safety, military, religious or ceremonial reasons, caps are generally just leisure fashion statements.

However, you can find many hats and caps that blur the line I've tried to draw above considerably.

One thing however is almost always true caps are hats, but many hats are not caps.

Don’t say what about bottle caps they are not headwear unless you make a hat out of bottle caps that is.

Some common caps - Baseball Cap, Flat cap, Barge Cap, Garrison Cap, Sleeping Cap, Leasure Cap, Bathing Cap, Docker Cap

Some common hats - Bowler hat, Top Hat, Hard Hat, Fedora, Cowboy Hat, Tricorn. Coolie Hat, Chefs Hat.

Somethings that are worn on the head that are not hats or Caps - Turban, Helmet, Bandanna, Hood, War Bonnet, Masks, Wig, Crown

Unexpected Hat Haul

Earlier in the week, I bid on a pile of hats, a made a rock bottom bid not expecting to win, although among the 11 hats I had spotted 4 hats that looked worth having.

Anyway, I won.

When I received the parcel, I found really only 2 were worth the bid (hidden at the bottom of this pile), a couple more may find a use, overall worth the low bid, but glad I did not bid more.

One I photographed but was only worthy of the bin, the green one above.

Those in the photo above are from a King and I theatre production, I'm not sure yet what to do with, some need a bit of TLC, I will photograph them before they go or use comes to mind

Dents and Creases

Hats particularly fedora's / cowboy hats get much of their looks from the creases and dents put in the crown.

Below are the 6 main types in my opinion

Open crown
Also called a round crown, open crowns don’t have any creases at all, basically a dome shape prior to creasing.

Centre dent
This crown shape is also called a centre crease, a shape that features a single crease down the centre of the crown

Telescope
Also called a flat crown or flat top, a telescope crown is marked by its simple circular indentation

Diamond dent
The crown is diamond-shaped  when viewed from the top

Teardrop dent
This crown type can be identified by a teardrop shape that is more pointed at the front and curved at back.

Cattleman dent
This crown type has a main centre dent/crease with 2 smaller creases on either side

Hat Blog 4 years onward

Back on the 17th May 2015 I made my first post to this blog and said

"I will post a picture of me in one my many hats every week, never the same hat until I run out of hats which should take me to around 2017 with the hats I have at the moment, after that who knows"

It's now 2019, I have continued well past 2017 posting a hat almost every week, I now believe I have enough hats to take me into 2020, after that who knows

During this time blogger stats say my most read post was one titled medieval baseball cap, a post about a robin hood style, bycocket that can be worn backwards like some people wear baseball caps

The most popular themes seem to be my post about my more usual hats and also oriental hats, I assume this is because most other hat styles are well covered elsewhere.

I also intend to start adding a few informative posts.
