The Walking Sock Hat

 The Walking Sock Hat

The sock hat was headwear used by pirates, basically a knitted beanie but this uses an old walking sock stretched over your head.

The end of the sock was tied in a knot in the photo below and is quite a comfortable hat, I would almost be tempted to wear it in public.

Plus you can get 2 hats out of a pair of socks, or use that odd sock that has lost its significant other.

Button Down Hat

This hat was a brilliant Christmas gift, made by Julie.

Julie has knitted and crochet me 3 hats over several years, one of her hats is my most worn hat by a country mile and I can see this one becoming well worn as well

Julie has advised me the hat is modified from a pattern called Button Down Hat by Cheryl Oberle and published in a book called Luxury One Skein Wonders.

She modified it to match the yarn she used and to make it bigger as she says all the hats in the book assume the wearer has a tiny head, if she followed the pattern it would have come out at 50cm rather than 60cm.

The hat is intended to be roomy, like a bag so it traps air around the head and helps to keep in the warmth.

The hat is basically a rectangle with 2 of the corners folded down to give it shape

Seen in these last photos during a recent walk, complete with a twig which I did not notice

Sock Hats

All pirates without a tricorn or bandana have one good choice left the sock hat.

These sock hats are made from stretchy tubes of jersey material, one end of the tube is knotted which add a nice weighty end to the tip of the hat.

Part of a bag of 10 sock hats that form part of clubs stock pirate kit, with the odd minor repair they have been around for 20 years.

Easy to make and easy to wear, one size fits all.

is it a bird

is it a seagul

Ransom Beanie

The Beanie hat, a brimless cloth hat.

This beanie was a give-away at film fair, I'm guessing around 1996 since that was when the film was released.

I use the hat as a general purpose hat that I keep at the ready in my winter coat for when the going gets bitter cold, like this week.

Santa hat

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM RICHARD IN A HAT

I have no photographic evidence to prove Santa Claus ever wore this style of hat, but I've seen enough Christmas films to know its true.

Not having a Santa costume I had to improvise with photo shop

Stocking Cap

This is what I call a sock hat although its not made of socks, perhaps its made like socks, better known as knitted bobble hat or stocking cap.

On the day of purchase complete with label still attached, a friend took photos so I could see if I liked it before I handed over the cash.

In my opinion all good pirates crew need a sock hat and this was purchased with that idea in mind as in the photo below.
