Steam Punked Hat

This top hat as been steampunked

A Christmas gift from friends Jock and Bridgette.

The hat was purchased but when the gifters got it home they discovered a poor quality conversion.

So they took it apart bought loads of cogs and chains and redid it themselves

I was very pleased with the results, a fabulous gift.

The top hat is also a good fit, which with rigid hats is important, I would normally try first.

The hat comes complete with working clock on the top.

I even managed to take it off my head.

Beanie to Snood

One of the great uses of beanie hats is to make snoods, most of the £2 beanie hats from the supermarket are a tube of machine knitted fabric rolled over and stitched together at the top. Unpick the top or just cut the top off and you have a long tube of stretchy fabric which become an instant cheap snood.

Snoods are mainly used in lrp especially by the crew who need quick changes. They are used to hide the edges of masks and cover the neck where the mask ends saving makeup.

Cheap beanie plain colour, cheaper the better usually.

Feel for the double layer of fabric.

Unpick the top, or cut or tears if you want it quick.

This leaves a tube of fabric.

Stretch over your head

until around your neck.

Then pull up over your head, usually with you mask already on as below.

The rough unfinished edges you get from unpicking or tearing, just add to the effect.

Nefertiti Hat

This home made hat is based on the Nefertiti hat/crown

Nefertiti was a Queen of Egypt from 1370 BC to 1330 BC

This hat was made as a lrp prop and not historically accurate in any shape or form, plus its made of cardboard and felt.

To make this hat I made a basic paper pattern by trial and error and then transferred it to some thicker card.

Lots of glue and staples later I got the basic shape.

Which I then covered in felt and gold leather look fabric.

before finally glueing on some gem cake decorations.

Egyptian Kerchief

Egyptian Kerchief head covering is based on an actual remains recovered from tombs

The fabric has one straight edge about 60 cm long and rounded off back edge measuring 45 cm front to back and then the tape is about 80mm long. I made 10 of these for a lrp event in an afternoon from scraps of fabric.

Having made these I think the front to back measurement should be increased perhaps to 50cm

The fabric is wrapped around the forehead, tied at the back of the head and then draped over.

And provides a nice simple head covering which protects the back of the head from the sun.

Well this happened

This theatre hat is more Arabian Princes than Prince

But you can just about get with it. 

A basic cardboard cylinder covered in fabric and then plastic decorations, it sets a scene well and could be made at home by anyone.

Mind Machine

This is the Cognizance Interception Contrivance.

Made as a prop from bits of a Cyberman mask, vacuum cleaner, cutlery drainers, door knobs, bird feeders and lots of other odds and ends

The device is designed to intercept telepathic communication between demons, however it gives you a bit of headache.

It does blow dry wet hair as a extra feature.
