Tyrolean Hat

This is a wool felt Tyrolean Hat

I have posted information about this style of hat before, so won't go over it again other than to say the name Tyrolean hat comes from Tyrol a region in Austria

Can also be known as a Sepplhut
Although Sepplhut can also be taller, pointier and have wider brims, the distinctive feature of Sepplhut seems to be wool felting and the cord around the base of the crown

A Christmas gift

Marshall Rich

Back in 1872 when I was a cowboy I liked to wear my black hat.

Then one day I got shot in the shoulder by a cat rustler.

I survived.

The cat rustler realised herding cats was a bad plan and took up baking.

 The cats remain unrustled.

I Stole Gandalfs Hat

This is felt wizards hat, grey in colour similar to Gandalf's from the Lord of Rings/The Hobbit films and images.

Apparently, the name Gandalf comes via Tolkien from a Norse mythology name meaning staff man or wand elf.

Gandalf wore the grey hat before he became head of the Middle Earth wizards, while he was the Grey Wanderer, the Grey Pilgrim, Greyhame, Gandalf the Grey, among many other names which don't contain the word grey.

The hat will soon be adopted by a character I play in lrp.

The hat was purchased from Leonardo Carbone.

Homburg

The Homburg hat is the hat famously worn by Winston Churchill and popular with Gangsters.

The homburg is a formal hat that started to become worn from around 1890 when people like King Edward VII wore one.

Dwight Eisenhower and Anthony Eden also famously wore the Homburg as did Al Pachino in Gangster films which resulted in gaining the nickname the Godfather

The hat is identified by a single dent running down the centre of the crown, called a gutter crown, a darker coloured band around the bottom of the crown and stiff curled up brim.

It is a wool felt hat that usually comes in dark colour, grey is the most popular

The hat gets its name from Bad Homburg a district in Germany where Edward VII brought the hat back to Britain from.

I don't own a cigar, so went for the pipe for my photos.

Oriental Evil

This Hat as the look of a Mongolian hat but is a medieval European hat.

This is felt hat I believe copied from a woodcut of the period

Now many images of Mongolian hats can also be very similar to this and they would also wear a hat made of felt, it perhaps decorated with trims and maybe beads. The Mongolian did invade Europe in the 13th century so who knows perhaps ideas got swapped.

Feathers - Hat Accessories

In the next few posts, I'm going to select a few hats that have feather used as decorations.

Starting with this basic wide-brimmed felt hat which has been accessorized with feathers, braiding and nice broach.

By the way, depending on the lighting and background this hat much redder than it appears in most of the photos see the photo below.

Hats were often an indicator of social status, so extra accessories make them look much grander.

Feathers add volume and height, certain feathers are rare and exotic so indicate wealth.

This particular hat given to me as a gift is intended to be a musketeer style hat from the 17th century.

Reviewing the Situation

This crumpled top hat makes a perfect hat for a late Victorian tramp.

or a Fagin like villain.

This well-battered grey top hat look takes time or skill to produce, or just luck but is perfect for theatre or larp.

Anyway, I now need to pick a pocket or two.

Masonic Hat

This red hat is a hat worn by members of the modern Freemasons

It was given as a gift by a friend who is a member, I have no idea what rank or role the hat is for, if indeed you need a rank to wear it.

The hat is basically a felt covered stiffened ring of card or thin plastic with felt stretch over the crown, it's very lightweight but well made and still feels sturdy.

Freemasons are an organization that originated in medieval times, as a body that controlled and looked after local stonemason and represented them with the local bureaucracy. Nowadays they are a ritualised group that helps businessmen network and do charity work.

They are often associated with a degree of conspiracy due to there requirement that each rank keeps the knowledge of what they learn as they progress secret from the ranks below.

Greeky Fez

This hat reminds me of one worn by Greek soldier in full dress uniform, look up Evzones and you will see what I mean.

The hat is halfway between a fez and a smoking cap, with a very long tassel.

This is a theatrical hat, one made for use in a theatre production I don't know what production, only it was sold as such on e-bay.

Made of soft red felt, I would put it the head of small Greek curiosity shop owner.

Purple Beret

A purple beret is ideal for a flamboyant character, definitely not a military beret or one you could wear to start a revolution.

This beret was added to our lrp crew kit by one of the refs Amy.

Made from nice soft felt with little felt cord in the center that is common to many non-military berets
